Based on the Metropolitan Opera's curriculum, Creating Original Opera,
students create an original play, with music. Written to be used by a single
classroom of approximately 25 students, we have adapted this standards conscious
curriculum to accommodate all 70+ of our Kindergarten through eighth grade
students.
With the guidance of adult facilitators, students write the
script, lyrics and music; design and build the sets and costumes; perform; stage
manage and crew for the entire performance. Once the curtain rises, no adults
are telling students what to do, where to be, or when to be there. They have the
responsibility to play their roles, play the music, operate the lighting, change
the scenery, and all other aspects of the performance.
